Maps of internally displaced persons (IDPs),
Batticaloa, Sri Lanka

We publish several maps of internally displaced persons (IDPs). Core focus is IDP migration in Batticaloa District. Additional maps comprise overview maps of IDPs in Sri Lanka, Ampara District, or in more detail, specific divisions within Batticaloa District, or overview of Welfare Centers (IDP centers).

These maps are being updated frequently. The order of the files is from Batticaloa north to south, the numbers presented in the map correspond with the number of families (not persons). Maps show the distinction between camps that have been closed, still in use or sites that have been designated for longer term use.

Older maps show additional information such as contact info of focal points and leading NGOs.

IDPs in Welfare Centers, Batticaloa District:

Welfare centers or IDP centers are mostly large buildings and form the core distribution network of aid. Often welfare centers are a combination of buildings, tents and shelters, for instance the compound of a church, mosque or school. In our maps the difference between IDP center / site or combination is mentioned.

IDPs, Ampara District

Although most of the IDPs are originated in Trincomalee, some of the IDPs have migrated all the way towards Ampara District, most of them staying at friends or relatives. These IDPs are often called host-IDPs.

Generally, IDP figures are provided at a national, or district level. Mearch is producing detailed maps of areas with high numbers of IDPs. These maps can be used for distribution of relief aid and/or coordination.
